Checking Items Off of my Fall Bucket List with Healthy Applesauce Bread

I’m checking things off of my Fall bucket list left and right! I’ve made pumpkin cookies, decorated for Fall, created a new chili recipe, bought new riding boots and made applesauce bread….. which brings us to today’s recipe. I’ve wanted to make applesauce bread ever since trying it at my grandparents’ house several years ago.

With the apples and spices, this applesauce bread seemed very much like a Fall food, so that’s why I included it in my Fall bucket list. If you’re not a big fan of pumpkin or pumpkin bread (blasphemy) this recipe might just be for you. Apples are so juicy and wonderful tasting this time of year. I used my favorite apple for this recipe…. a large, crisp and predominantly sweet Honeycrisp apple.

Healthy Whole Wheat Applesauce Bread

Incredibly moist wholesome bread that's perfect with your morning cup of coffee.

  • 1 large (1 cup) apple, peeled, cored and grated
  • 1 tsp cinnamon + 1/4 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup honey + 1 tbsp.
  • 1.5 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1.5 cup whole wheat pastry flour (spelt or whole wheat)
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar or brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • pinch of all spice
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla

  • Prepare a 9 x 5 loaf pan with cooking spray and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Combine grated apple, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp. honey and lemon juice in a small bowl and set aside.
  • Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl and combine all wet ingredients and sugar in a medium bowl and beat together.
  • Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and blend on low. Don't overmix. Fold in apples.
  • Pour mixture into loaf pan and bake at 350 for 55 minutes. Cool for about 20 mins before slicing.

This bread is so moist, that you don’t need to top it with anything. It’s lovely right out of the oven with a cup of coffee. But if you must, it also pairs wonderfully with nut butter, Greek yogurt or pumpkin butter. Believe me, I know this for a fact because I’ve tried all three options!

Something to think about….

Do you have a Fall Bucket List? If so, have you checked anything off of it yet?

Have you had applesauce bread before?

What’s your favorite type of apple? I pretty much stick with Gala, Pink Lady or Honeycrisp apples.

Have a super wonderful weekend and go make a Fall food!

  1. I love McIntosh and golden delicious apples! I guess the applesauce bread won out over the cookies ;) Making us wait for those cookies, eh? This bread looks delicious. Must stock up on GF AP flour to substitute.

My favourite apples are Honeycrisp, Gala, and Golden Delicious. I’ve been loving all the local ones I’ve been getting lately at the market!

    • I bet this would be so good with homemade applesauce! That’s still one thing that I need to try making. I’ve been wanting to try Amanda’s recipe.

  5. Yummo! How do you have time to do all this baking and cooking– you are a rockstar Kim. I am making this next week! Thank you!!

  6. I’ve used applesauce in bread recipes before, but never as the star ingredient. This sounds amazing though! I adore apples and love this the year when they taste even more delicious. I used to be really big on Pink Ladies, but Golden Delicious recently stole my heart.

  7. Yay for getting a bunch of things crossed off that bucket list! I’ve been working on mine as well.
Mmm….applesauce bread sounds amazing. I love applesauce, but can’t eat too much of it or I get these weird hives. It’s so odd.
But, usually I can handle it in bread, which is always a plus!

    • That’s weird. Sounds like my daughter with avocado…. she can eat some, but if she eats too much her lips swell up.

  8. This looks GORGEOUS!

  9. Yay! I am super duper excited about this recipe, especially since apples have been so affordable lately! I am pretty sure that my co-workers would LOVE me if I made (and shared!) this :).

  10. Ohhh YUM! Can’t wait to make this! Maybe it’ll happen today… ;) How do you think regular whole wheat flour would do in comparison to pastry?
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries Fall FavoritesMy Profile

    • Hope you get a chance to give it a try! I think regular whole wheat will work just fine, especially if you’re used to baking with it. It will just be a bit more dense. Whole wheat pastry flour seems to cook up more like all-purpose flour.

  11. Glad you decided to go with the bread ;) It looks delicious!!

My favourite kind of apple is definitely pink lady by far. Although we don’t get honey crisp apples here in Australia, or at least not that I’ve seen anyway!

  12. yum!! this recipe looks great, Kim! Thanks for sharing!

  13. This looks amazing! I just bought a whole bunch of apples I need to bake up :) Perfect!

  14. I really like the healthier ingredients but would like to sub the egg, maybe for a flax egg instead. Hope to take a loaf for my preschoolers snack time. Yum!

  15. This was the best applesauce bread it was moist and even my son loved it! Thanks

  16. Can you substitute coconut flour for the whole wheat flour?

    • Coconut flour can be a little tricky and requires more liquid than other flours. I would not use coconut flour for this recipe, but if you’re wanting to use a grain-free flour, try almond flour. Good luck!
